Plastic Moulds for Concrete Test Cylinders

Recent trials have established the benefits of heavy duty plastic moulds for concrete test cylinders. The heavy duty plastic moulds have insulating properties that minimise the effect of heating or cooling of the sample, due to high or low ambient temperatures.

This results in more consistent and higher strength readings on one-to-ten day samples and without the need to cover the moulds with an insulating foil-lined blanket.

In cold weather the concrete in steel moulds is normally colder than the in-situ concrete, meaning the strength of the samples is less than the in-situ strength. This increases the curing time for the samples to reach the required strength for form-work removal.

These moulds are well-suited for construction using post-stressed concrete. Unlike steel moulds, plastic moulds prevents cooling down in the winter time which slows the curing of the concrete. Hylec’s plastic moulds have a more predictable curing temperature.

An advantage of these moulds is that they weigh less than 1.5 kg each compared to 4.5 kg for a steel mould. 2-4 samples can be safely carried by test personnel and cleaning using an organic acid spray and cloth means half the time required to clean steel moulds.

In operation

In operation the mould inner surfaces are coated with oil prior to casting of the sample to ensure easy removal of the sample by applying air pressure to the hole in the base.  Water can also be used for sample ejection.

The lid and mould, being plastic, insulate the sample against the effects of hot and cold weather. Tests show sample strength using plastic moulds is stronger at 3 and 10 days but with no detectable difference at 28 days.

The life of these plastic moulds has been found to be more than 5 years under the severe conditions.

  • These moulds suit 100mm diameter test cylinders and have rigid 20mm thick sides and base. They also include a stainless steel base insert flat to 20 microns to prevent damage from rodding. Mould diameter is between 99.8mm and 100mm, which is more accurate than alternatives
  • The base includes an outer steel plate to enable the mould to be used with a mechanical vibrator with magnetic clamping. This base has a laser cut serial number for mould identification
  • The base has a 5mm diameter central hole with a plug held in place with a spring clip. This hole is used to eject the sample using an air supply of pressure of about 1-2 bar

  • The life of these plastic moulds under the severe conditions found in the Middle East is 5+ years.
